Eighty years of an icon, eighty years of stories

The 23rd of April 1946 marked the birth of a dream on two wheels, transforming it into a symbol of freedom, style and optimism. Eight decades on, that vision has become a collective story where the past meets the future in an ongoing dialogue. The Vespa was born in Pontedera, from a bold idea to get the post-war country moving again. Accessible and democratic, it was designed to be easy to ride and suitable for everyone, without exception. A project of universal mobility.

Freedom in motion

It pioneered light urban mobility and gave new meaning to women’s mobility, which until then had been limited and subordinate to others. Over the decades, the Vespa became a cult object that became part of the lives of those who rode it, representing an extension of their personal style and way of being. The Vespa quickly conquered the worlds of cinema, music, art, photography and fashion, entering the contemporary collective imagination. Over the course of eighty years, more than 160 models have been produced, all faithful to a distinct identity.

Creativity without limits

Vespa has written an indelible chapter in the history of art and popular culture. No other vehicle has, over the years, borne the signature of some of the world’s most creative and brilliant minds, such as Salvador Dalí in the summer of 1962, who brought a Vespa to life, or, more recently, Giorgio Armani, who reinterpreted the Vespa 946 in 2015. Next came the turn of the young American designer Sean Wotherspoon, who imagined it in colours reminiscent of street art. This was followed by the House of Christian Dior, which proposed a design for one of the Vespa 946s. In 2022, it was Justin Bieber who created a ‘total-white’ Vespa. In 2025, Urs Fischer and Frank Gehry created two Vespa Primavera models to support the Special Olympics.

A unique identity

What other product, with or without wheels, can boast such a diverse array of distinguished designers? They all share a single common thread: the Vespa, which, despite being reimagined by the genius of each artist, has always remained true to itself, strengthening its identity with every new interpretation. Today we honour this legacy, which continues to inspire cultures, trends and people, allowing ourselves to be swept up by Vespa’s innate creativity, wherever it may take us.

A global celebration

A whole range of projects has been devised to mark this partial milestone of 80 years. From the new Vespa 80th to the clothing and accessories in the “80TH ANNIVERSARY” collection, crowning a journey that defies the passage of time. Eighty years of stories from so many ordinary people. Eighty years of iconic designs, adventures and joie de vivre: this is the soul of Vespa, looking towards the future. Rome has been chosen as the ideal destination to celebrate eighty years of an icon. Four days of festivities and events, from 25 to 28 June, in the greatest celebration in the history of a legend.

The new Vespa Primavera 80th and GTS 80th

The anniversary celebrations centre on the new Vespa 80th, available in the Primavera and GTS versions. The design revives the Verde Pastello colour of the first Vespas from 1946 and features it as a distinctive element of the anniversary series. The design is complemented by tone-on-tone elements in a deeper shade of green: the seat, the rubber inserts on the footboard, the rear shield cover and the handlebar grips. The wheels evoke the closed geometries of the historic models, drawing inspiration from the 1946 Vespa 98.
