FuturPiaggio
6 Italian lessons on mobility and modern life

by Jeffrey Schnapp

To celebrate 130 years of Piaggio, an example of the excellence in Italian industry, a modern reinterpretation of the "bolted book" by Fortunato Depero.

Thanks to the Vespa, born in 1946, icon of design and symbol of freedom from the fifties, Piaggio was protagonist of a mobility revolution. The story of a company that has always looked to the future is recounted in a uniquely designed volume that takes its cue in terms of graphic inspiration from two examples par excellence of our editorial history, the futuristic 1927 bolted book by Depero and the "Red books" by Olivetti from the seventies. The volume describes the key episodes in the Piaggio Group's history and its vocation for innovation through the brands (Piaggio, Vespa, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Gilera, Scarabeo, Derbi, Ape), in a continuous dialogue with in depth descriptions, as well as textual and visual quotations. However, the new future challenges are not neglected. The Piaggio Group intends to pave the way in the new age of mobility, or rather "movability", as Jeffrey Schnapp defines it in a true Manifesto included in the book. The Group is a European leader in the two-wheeled segment with production reaching a half a million vehicles every year. From 1946 to the present, more than 18 million Vespas have taken to the roads all over the world. The Piaggio Group brands have made history in motorcycle racing on a global level, taking 104 world titles between Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Gilera and Derbi.

"I want a vehicle that puts the country on two wheels, but not a traditional motorcycle."
- Enrico Piaggio
